AI (Artificial Intelligence) grabs more heat compared to the past, which is the result of the development of this burgeoning technology. People are familiar with this word and a life connected intensely with AI as well.
The proposing of the Turing Test, which is a standard of judging whether a machine is intelligent by arranging it to have a talk with a person and avoiding its identification as the lifeless fake being recognized, became an important symbol in the development of AI. Since then, the initial thought and presumption of machines that possess the capacity of behaving as humans came out and was gradually tested and completed.
When John McCarthy established the scientific word “Artificial Intelligence” in 1956 during the Dartmouth Conference, the idea was treated formally in the academic field. The first generation of the scientists of AI technology appeared and made enormous contributions to bring it reality. The conference was no doubt a milestone, which illustrated the naissance of AI and the following improvement of it.
There was a gold period of the growth of AI from 1956. GPS, a program helping people to solve the problems, was invented. The template is used in numerous fields such as the proof of theorem, the geometric questions and the chess. Furthermore, the LISP was created as one kind of the programming languages. It contributes to the enhancing of AI and still has an influence on the recent work. However, the bottleneck occurred in 1974. As the result of the dissatisfying outcomes, the enthusiasm of specialists died down. People lost their curiosity and motivation in the repeating failures. Some of them gave up and left, leaving the flame of AI diminishing. The amount of government’s investment decreased shapely, which was a strike on the economic support of the technology. AI suffered from the winter of its development at that time.
Because of the acceptance of AI’s commercial value in 1980, the business in which the technique was applied expanded. Experiencing the threat of the personal computers invented by Apple in 1987, it again obtained the public attention because of an objective and rational recognition of the technology. AI had a rebirth! When the Deep Blue defeated the winner of the chess, scientists realized the value of AI and kept the passion in its explosion. Moreover, the study of Artificial Neural Network brought the hope of developing a machine that can exceed human beings. In the recent years, numbers of companies pay attention on AI and participate in the consummation of the technique. AI will be applied to more fields and will possibly develop more branches.
As a conclusion, AI experienced both the abyss and the heaven during its improvement and becomes a strong stream gradually. How do we prepare ourselves to the trend is a problem needing our considerations and decisions. We have to hold an appropriate recognition of this technique, including acknowledging its beneficial influences and harmful impacts, and choose our direction, which has an important meaning in the future development of human society.
